Learning Toys

The health and wellbeing of a child is the primary concern of any parent of a child, baby, or kid. Parents work their lives for their children and it is no surprise that they want them to succeed. Since every parent wants to see their child succeed, they strive to help them develop to their fullest potential. At this point, learning toys enter into the equation as they are the combination of a parent’s interest in their child’s success and a healthy potential for learning.  The rest of this article will attempt to outline some of the advantages and a primary criticism against the use of video games as a learning method.

Children cannot by their own understanding develop to fully understand the value of learning at a young age. For this reason, the parents or other caretakers must be sure that it is a priority and assist in the upbringing of the child. This care is the primary reason that learning toys were invented. Programs like Sesame Street and the like have been using the power and reach of the television set to educate children from a very young age, and the value was easily transferred to the realm of video games. Parents will invest in these programs with the intent of watching the child grow and succeed in their life’s pursuits latter on. Parents have the working capital to invest in their children and the time commitment to be sure that it pays off in the long run. For this reason, learning toys are a great utilization of the relationship between parents and children as caregivers and providers.

One of the advantages to these different learning programs is that children enjoy playing games. From a young age children are brought up in the environment of adults and other children to play and socially interact with one another. An individual educational game as a toy is but an extension of this understanding of what a child enjoys. Since the kid enjoys the game, they play it more, and this in turn promotes staying with a program and return learning and growth of the child. The consistent return element of the game play does have its drawbacks however, and there are critics who have voiced concerns about some forms of learning toys and they will be addressed in the next paragraph.

Systems like the Speak & Read, Power Touch, or LeapPad all are meant to be educational while being a video game. The dilemma is retaining the child’s attention span with these learning toys while instructing the child on critical core concepts and sciences. Some researchers have used this attention oriented video game construction method as a criticism and a plausible cause of the large numbers of recorded ADHD and ADD found in the modern generation of children and the correspondingly large number of prescribed drugs. Although valid, this criticism does not cover all of the potential learning toys that are on the market.

Video games are not the only source of learning toys out there. A child is inherently the best and brightest learning font that takes place in the biological life of a human. You never learn as quickly or as much as when you were a child. This means that for kids, almost anything could be termed a learning toy insofar as it teaches the child something. A blanket with patterns on it, colorful blocks and corresponding sized holes, playground equipment could all fall under this category as each of these teaches the child something different. The blanket teaches the baby to differentiate between shapes and colors, just as the blocks and their corresponding sized holes do. The playground is an excellent area for the child to develop socially with the other children, as well as to develop motor skills and test out their growing muscle and bone structure. As shown, children are immensely capable of turning almost anything into a learning experience, making the terminology quite broad.
